Proposals are unforgettable—a whirlwind of emotion, excitement, and nerves all rolled into one extraordinary moment. If you’ve been proposed to, you’ve probably imagined the where, when, and how a thousand times. Every getaway or special occasion feels like this could be it!

If you’re the one proposing, you know it’s just as thrilling as it is nerve-wracking. From choosing the perfect ring and plotting the surprise to wondering, Will they say yes? or What if they don’t like the ring but won’t tell me?—it’s a roller coaster of emotions that makes the moment even more special.

As a photographer, I’ve had the privilege of capturing countless proposals, and let me tell you—I still get butterflies every time someone asks me to document such a monumental moment. I don’t just take photos; I dive headfirst into the planning process, helping to perfect every detail to ensure the memories and emotions are captured beautifully.

One proposal stands out. Just a few days before Christmas, I woke up to a message from an unknown number: “Hi Josh, I found your number on Google. Are you still doing photography? I know it’s a long shot, but are you available to photograph an engagement this morning?”

Skeptical but intrigued, I called back. On the other end was a polite young man who had driven six hours overnight from North Carolina to surprise his girlfriend, who was staying with her parents in Delaware. His original plan had fallen through, and he was determined to make this happen before the holidays.

Luckily, the location was just a couple of miles away, and I was available. We met immediately to devise a plan: he’d surprise her on the beach while I captured the moment. Sitting in my car, we waited for the signal from her mom, who was supposed to text us when they were on their way.

But plans rarely go off without a hitch. Mom and daughter arrived early, throwing us into a scramble.We quickly adapted. As they walked down a long dock extending over the bay, we tiptoed onto the beach, staying hidden until the perfect moment. When she turned and saw him waiting for her, the surprise on her face was indescribable. She was so overwhelmed she could barely speak—a true “loss for words” moment straight out of a romantic movie.

Being part of moments like this, witnessing pure love and joy, is why I love what I do. Capturing these stories isn’t just my job; it’s my passion.
