I will admit, I am a big fan of "Golden Hour" the hour before sunset and after sunrise when the the sun is low in the sky, this soft creates the perfect environment for photographing people. While most of my family photos here in Delaware, as well as back in Chicago, have been taken either along the beach, in a forest during fall colors, or with a commonly used backdrop, I am beginning to love using backdrops not so commonly seen as favorable. Such is the case with this location which I saw while scouting for a different type of shoot. In photography, I am thinking of the end product in my head, and sort of reverse engineering how this is going to look. Everything from the subjects, clothing, backdrop, lighting, and the mood. This photo speaks "moody" to me . Subdued clothing, soft smiles, and maybe even a cloudy, or breezy day with less than optimal lighting conditions. For this photo, I wanted to keep the backdrop of tall grasses out of focus mostly to retain their soft, almost blurry feel. The variety of green and brown colors, textures, and heights blended perfectly with my clients outfit choice of solid colors. As a photographer, I never like to photograph somewhere new that I have not photographed before, without first scouting the location. I have learned this the hard way before, so I try to avoid this at all costs. Knowing where the light is at different times of the day helps tremendously. In this case, the sun in the evening is lighting the subjects from the front. But if the sun had been lighting the subjects from the back, this would have also worked just as well and I would have used a strobe (flash) in the front very likely to fill in a little light. I plan on using this location more in the future, and I can't wait to play around to see different results.
